We have tallied the numbers and this year AIM employees removed 4,111 bags of invasive milfoil from lakes across the Adirondack Park and as far south as Saratoga.  Based on average bag weights that equals a cool 51.39 tons.

Final expense of eliminating Asian clam pest could more than double initial cost estimates

LAKE GEORGE — Efforts to smother invasive Asian clams in Lake George not far from Million Dollar Beach appear to be working, but a $475,000 budget won’t be enough.

Large mats placed this spring on the lake bottom atop a 5-acre infested area killed 97 percent of clams near nine shoreline resorts and the village beach, according to a report released Wednesday by the Lake George Asia Clam Rapid Response Task force.  Click here to read more.

The U.S. Small Business Administration held an awards luncheon in Albany, NY where AIM was among 25 other area businesses honored with the 2011 Small Business Excellence Award. AIM was nominated for the award by the Adirondack Economic Development Corporation (AEDC).

ALBANY — Small businesses specializing in a variety of industries, from artisan baked goods to textile manufacturing, will be recognized at the U.S. Small Business Administration’s 13th Annual Small Business Excellence Awards luncheon in Albany.

The SBA, the New York Business Development Corp., area lenders and economic developers will recognize these successful businesses at a luncheon and awards ceremony on Monday at 11:30 a.m. The luncheon will be held at The Desmond Hotel and Conference Center in Albany.

In addition to 24 Small Business Excellence award winners, SBA will recognize two National Small Business Week award winners for their outstanding achievements and the positive impact they’ve had on the economy and communities in upstate New York. A detailed profile on each winner will be issued following the luncheon.

Divers targeting Asian Clams: Mats spread on floor of Lake George to smother invaders.

LAKE GEORGE — Scuba divers plunged into the 40-degree, gray-blue waters of Lake George on Monday to start laying down acres of mats on the bottom in a bid to snuff out an aquatic invader.

The mats target the fast-breeding Asian clam, an invasive species that was found last summer in the lake about a thousand yards north of Million Dollar Beach in the village of Lake George.

Now, officials hope the mats will smother hundreds of thousands of clams — which took just three years to grow — before the invaders can reproduce again next month and spread elsewhere in the lake. During the next three weeks, divers will lay down more than 900 overlapping mats over a six-acre section of lake bottom, sealing off the clams from dissolved oxygen in the lake, said Sandra Nierzwicki-Bauer, director of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute‘s Darrin Fresh Water Institute….Click Here to read more.

Startup Company Attacks Milfoil.

On a recent hot day in late May, a team of divers is hard at work on Brant Lake, situated along Route 8 in Warren County. While the cluster of a motor boat, a few kayaks and inner tubes makes it appear that the crew is there for fun in the 90-plus heat, they are on a mission: To do some underwater weeding.

What acid rain was for the 1980s, Eurasian milfoil was for the past decade. In the latter half of the 2000s, as more Adirondack lakes became overrun with aquatic invasives, nonprofits started coming up with ways to combat the problem….Click Here to read more.
